We all know what “story” means, right? I mean, they say storytelling is an innate human skill, our oldest method of learning and communicating. So we all what it is and how to do it, right?

​“Story” has become such a buzzword that’s used so generally in so many contexts, it’s no wonder even confidant storytellers scratch their heads about what story is!

This workshop series offers simple, accessible ways to talk about story – what it is, what it’s made of – and how to use its building blocks to craft new stories or remix old ones. Across the series we'll play with stories in a creative writing context as well as the stories that shape our lives, culture, and communities.

WORKSHOPS:

1. What's a story, really? – Explore the basic building blocks of story.

2. The stories that shape us – Discover the stories from favorite childhood books or movies to family lore and cultural myths that have a profound impact on you and your daily life

3. What's a metanarrative – Maybe you've heard someone say, "Money is a story." What does that even mean? And if you don't like that story, how do you change (unweave, remix, overwrite) it?

4. ___: Through a story lens – What emerges when we look at simple things like work meetings, our relationship with our phones, a first date through the lens of story and story building blocks? Bring your own challenge or idea and let's find out!

5. Creative storytelling craft – Finally, a focus on crafting stories – the expressive, artistic, creative kind we typically think of. Workshop a story in progress or come imagine a new one.

6. Story & civic worldbuilding – How might worldbuilding in stories (especially fantasy stories) help us approach civic worldbuilding i.e., how we shape our local government and interact with our neighbors in more intentional, imaginative ways.
