Learn how to DJ the old fashioned way: all analog. just two turntables + a mixer + your brain!
Before we had all these fancy gadgets and gizmos like "screens" and "laptop" and "CDJs" and "mp3", DJing was a lot harder - and arguably more rewarding! In this course, you'll get hands on with the legendary "wheels of steel" and learn how to make two records line up into a seamless transition so you can keep a dancefloor rocking all night long. We'll break every rule your hipster friends imparted about playing records: we're gonna get our oily fingers all over the vinyl, violently scratch them back and forth beneath the needles, speed things up, slow things down, generally just have a bunch of fun playing music.
We'll cover all the basics and get much-needed practice time with each: how to cue a record up, beatmatch between two records, turn all the knobs on a mixer, figure out what the heck DJs are doing in their headphones all the time, and maybe even get into some basic scratching.
IMPORTANT: This course is 20% information, 80% practice - we're trying to learn a physical skill. For that reason, enrollment will be strictly capped to 6 participants to make sure everybody gets enough hands-on time (this isn't something easily practiced at home without a bunch of equipment, unfortunately!). Please only apply and take a slot if you can fully commit to joining all of the classes, otherwise you'd be taking a slot from somebody who could get more out of it! (The $25 course fee is purely for skin in the game.)
Suggested pre-requisites: Very basic music theory knowledge. You'd be fine catching all this on YouTube ahead of time if you don't know it already. Some terms to know/understand: tempo, beats per minute, meter (4/4 time), kick drum, etc.

from 2014-2021 I played hundreds of all-vinyl DJ sets around Boston + beyond as Camino 84, at places like The Sinclair, House of Blues, Brighton Music Hall, Middle East (up/down) + Zuzu, the Lilypad, ONCE, Brick + Mortar, O'Briens, you name it. got to open for acts like !!!, Escort, Shura, Aaron Carter, Roosevelt, Darwin Deez, AraabMuzik, Edo G, a whole bunch more i'm probably forgetting! "retired" but still spin for fun sometimes!
